GOTHAM GETS A PREMIER DATE & NEW TV SPOT

Select people who attend the International Comic-Con in San Diego later this month will get to see the pilot episode for Gotham, well before the rest of the viewing public. Everyone else, however, won’t have to wait that much longer to check out Fox’s much buzzed-about crime/procedural based in the Batman universe – as the show now has a set-in-stone date air date for its premiere, to be accompanied by at least 12 more episodes.
Gotham follows one Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie), a cop and newcomer to Gotham City who is “destined for greatness,”but must first navigate an extremely corrupt city – one that will eventually give rise to “the great DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes,” as the show’s official description puts it. We already knew the show will be airing on Monday evenings beginning in Fall 2014, but Fox has now confirmed that Gotham will be up and running by September 22nd this year, to be exact.
A good chunk of pre-premiere marketing for Gotham has been focused on highlighting the famous Batman villains whose origins shall be explored over the course of the series, while also calling attention to certain characters – such as Jada Pinkett Smith’s Fish Mooney – who start off the show being, for all intents and purposes, bad to the bone already.
By comparison, the above “Heroes” TV spot instead puts a magnifying glass up close to the more admirable Gordon and his attempts to console the young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) so shortly after the boy’s parents are gunned down right in front of him. (Spoiler: In the long run, Gordon’s efforts don’t have quite the effect that he intended.)
The “World” promo for Gotham (see above) features the show’s head writer/executive producer Bruno Heller (the creator of HBO’s Rome and CBS’ The Mentalist TV series), as he talks about the show’s many different tones and elements – all working together to create a vision of the Batman universe that can vary from “craziness” to “beauty,” depending on the occasion.
That sounds about right, for a series that combines iconic comic book characters and neo-Noir tropes together; now, it just remains to be seen how adept Heller and his collaborators prove to be, when it comes to handling the task at hand.
