During a concert in Sydney, Australia, Kanye West stopped the music to call out a few fans who hadn’t gotten to their feet when he told the crowd to stand up during a performance of the song “The Good Life.” Only, these fans didn’t rise to their feet in defiance of Yeezy’s orders — they couldn’t because they’re wheelchair-bound.
Kanye started the song by telling the crowd, “I can’t do this song. I can’t do this show until everybody stand up… Unless you got a handicap pass and you get special parking and shit. ‘Imma see you if you ain’t standing up, believe me, I’m very good at that.” The majority of the crowd rose to their feet, but Kanye spotted a pair of fans who stayed seated and singled them out from onstage. According to the Daily Beast, one of the fans raised a prosthetic limb by way of explanation, so Yeezus gave him a pass (how kind). But he wasn’t done. Kanye literally sent his bodyguard out into the crowd to confirm that the second fan was also disabled and in a wheelchair. “He is in a wheelchair?” Kanye said when he got the lowdown. “It’s fine!” Oh fuck you, Kanye. How utterly disrespectful on so many levels. Disabled people have the right to exist in the world without being called out publicly and forced to “prove” anything. Secondly, able-bodied or not, people are under no obligation to follow Kanye West’s orders. What a shitty way to treat your fans. “I am a God”? More like, you are an asshole. [The Daily Beast]
