Forget about Captain Phillips, here is a Kenyan movie which gives the Hollywood block buster movie a run for its money. Fishing Without nets a fictional short film which is directed by Cutter Hodierne is about a fisherman who resorts to piracy in order to feed his family.
Fishing without nets sees Somali actors who speak in their native language trying to hijack a French oil tanker. |
When asked about the inspiration behind the movie, director Cutter Hodierne revealed that he was fascinated with the subject of piracy during the piracy peak that was witnessed in the past few years and as a result he traveled to Kenya to meet with potential Somali actors.
”There’s so many angles to this but what I care about is why would they do that,” Cutter told an audience which had converge to hear him speak.
Fishing without nets stars Somali actors such as Abdiwali Farrah, Abdi Siad, Abdikani Muktar, Abdikhadir Hassan, Reda Kateb and Idil Ibrahim.
The movie is 109 minute long and it is a hijacking tale about impoverished Somalis who ambush a french oil tanker and hold its crew for ransom.
The movie has been described by various critics (including The Hollywood Reporter) as being a tense drama with enough action as the story requires.

The Hollywood reporter indicates that Muktar a main actor in the movie plays Abdi, a loving husband and father whose lifelong work as a fisherman is running aground.
When Abdi is Unable to catch enough fish to support his family he is forced to pay smugglers to take his wife and son to Yemen; at that time Abdi didn't have enough money to join them, but his hopes to follow them as soon as he can are high.
The director Hodierne balanced all elements very well blending the emotional and the suspense in the movie quite well. Is it a match for Hollywood's big budget movie Captain phillips, maybe not but the movie is high up the list, Fishing without Nets has everything going for it, it’s distinct enough from many films to keep us watching.
